Bringing an Adult Family Member to Live With You in the UK

This Right to Remain guide (last updated October 2025) covers the immigration rules under Appendix FM for sponsoring an adult family member to live in the UK, with detailed sections on partner/spousal visas (leave to enter, leave to remain, and ILR), the minimum income requirement (£29,000 per year for applications from 11 April 2024 onwards), and options where that threshold cannot be met, including exceptional circumstances and human rights-based Article 8 arguments. It also explains how to apply to bring a parent to the UK on the basis of long-term care needs, what evidence is needed to prove a genuine and subsisting relationship, suitability requirements, fees, and what happens if an application is refused. Notably, the guide flags that the refugee family reunion route was paused from 4 September 2025, meaning those with refugee or humanitarian protection status must now use the standard family visa rules; it does not cover children-based applications or EU Settled Status routes.
